The Blue Mountain Bike tour in Ocho Rios offers a unique look at an often unseen side of Jamaica. Nothing like its neighboring areas popular with tourists, the Blue Mountains are a beautiful display of untouched, thriving vegetation. The traveler gets a true taste of Jamaica by witnessing the way of life of those living high on the hill tops.
A Description of the Day
The morning starts with a bus ride along the island to an open air restaurant. Here a brunch is served before loading back on the bus to head up the mountain. Next a rather bumpy ride ensues until the bus reaches the highest point in the Blue Mountains that can be accessed by vehicle, Hardware Gap.
While enjoying breathtaking views, tour staff assists travelers with fitting appropriate safety gear and choosing a bicycle. Participants are required to wear elbow pads, knee pads and helmets. The friendly staff continues with instructions and announcements regarding safety and the path of the ride.
After everyone is geared up and informed the real tour begins. Participants embark on 2 ½ hour downhill ride through the majestic mountain side. As the mountain mist cools the skin, the beauty of coffee plantations, grapefruit trees and exotic flowers and plants fill the senses.
The tour guides stop the group often at popular photo spots. There is always a guide there ready to take photos of the travelers.
The tour takes a short break along the route for a discussion about coffee. Participants are able to touch and taste fresh coffee beans. Traditional roasting methods are explained and demonstrated.
As the pavement levels and the ride comes to an end bikers are instructed to remove their safety gear and load the bus. Next they are driven a short distance back up the mountain to a small waterfall tucked away in the mountain side.
Everyone is welcome to take a dip in the cool water or simply take pictures. After about 20 minutes it is back on the bus and another stop is made at the open air restaurant. Finally the bus journey back to Ocho Rios begins, bringing a fun and adventurous day to an end.
